Why the water is the hottest thing this summer in Ramsgate

Did you know that Ramsgate is one of the hottest destinations in the UK for watersports?

With foreign holidays still hanging in the balance, many are looking at destinations in the UK to get that continental feel. The south-east corner of the country can provide just that.

With its own microclimate meaning that it gets more sun than the rest of the UK. Ramsgate and the surrounding area is THE staycation place to go.

And as many holidaymakers do when they are on the beach in Spain, France or Portugal, they use the opportunity to get on a paddleboard or try out kitesurfing. But there’s no need to hop on a plane or travel across the Channel, you can experience the same thing right here in Kent.

The sunny climate, sandy beaches and waterfront eateries make Ramsgate the perfect place to get your watersports fix. But never fear, if you’re not an adrenaline junkie, there are still plenty of coastal activities for all the family to enjoy.

Paddleboarding

Ramsgate Sands is great for paddleboarding – beginners and experienced paddlers alike. We have our very own paddleboarding school here in Ramsgate – Kite Pirates. Who not only offer lessons out on the water, but also run fantastic sunset and sunrise small group guided paddles. Picture the sun setting or rising over the sea with you taking in the breath-taking sunlight whilst basking in the peace and tranquillity of the water beneath you. Truly good for the soul. And a chance to perhaps see some seals too!

Kitesurfing

Ramsgate is a record-breaking destination for kitesurfing, with world champion Lewis Crathern jumping a massive 22.3 metres breaking the UK record in the process. So understandably, Ramsgate is a destination sought by many kitesurfers throughout the year.

Kite Pirates is the only accredited kite school based in Thanet, and offer coaching from beginners to experienced pros who want to get some additional tuition to perfect their jumps. All lessons include equipment so all you need to do is turn up and learn how to be at one with the wind. A truly exhilarating experience that you will never forget.

And for land lubbers…

We get that watersports might not be for everyone, but you know what, it’s just as exciting to watch. This year, visitors to Ramsgate have a real treat in store. The town will once again play host to the British Freestyle Kitesurfing Championships over the weekend of August 21/22. Attended by the best kitesurfers in the country. You will undoubtedly be in awe of the tricks and jumps that you wouldn’t think possible! So if you want to see some pros in action head on our way!

But that’s not all, for the first time EVER, Ramsgate will also play host to the British Kite Foiling Freestyle Championships (Ramsgate are the only destination to host this in 2021) and the British Wing Surfing Freestyle Championships (Ramsgate are the first – and only – destination to ever host this). A variation on kitesurfing, these upcoming sports are simply fascinating to watch, you won’t be disappointed. For more information on the Championships head to www.visitramsgate.co.uk.

But of course, it’s not just about the watersports. While you are here, there’s plenty to do and see in Ramsgate. Along with a medley of other outdoor activities by the sea. The only Royal Harbour in the UK, the continental vibe really comes into its own with the vast array of eateries around the waterfront marina, together with a wide variety of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets.

Ramsgate is known for being steeped in history, amazing architecture, beautiful sandy bays and nature reserves with wildlife that can only be seen in this part of the UK. It’s a truly ‘get-away-from-it-all’ destination, and with plenty of walking and cycling trails, it’s a wonderful place to explore the great outdoors.
