Dover, Deal and Sandwich are easy to reach, and even easier to explore without a car. High-speed and mainline trains connect the towns with London, Canterbury and the wider Kent coast, with frequent services between all three destinations. Local buses provide regular links between the towns, with services running to coastal villages, country parks and key attractions.
By Bike…
Each town has good cycle parking, including secure options at major stations, and there are dedicated walking and cycling routes linking the coast and countryside. The popular long-distance NCN Route 1 begins in Dover, passing Dover Castle and following the seafront through Kingsdown, Walmer and Deal, before continuing north to Sandwich via quiet lanes and the toll road (free for cyclists).
NCN Route 16 also links the three towns, using promenades and quiet lanes. It connects key spots including Deal Castle, Walmer, Sandwich and Betteshanger Country Park, offering relaxed riding with sea views.
Or by Foot…
There are many walking routes to enjoy, including along the King Charles III England Coast Path which follows the coastline, connecting Dover, Deal and Sandwich.
Why not head on the Dover to Deal: 3 Castles Walk and amble along the beautiful coastline, taking in three magnificent castles. Or, follow the Folkestone to Dover: Two Harbours Walk along the King Charles III England Coast Path, a route full of incredible clifftop views across the channel and glimpses into history from the Western Heights to Dover Castle.
Alternatively, whether the start of a mini pilgrimage in Kent or the full experience to Rome, follow the Via Francigena – one of Europe’s oldest pilgrimage routes – from Shepherdswell to Dover.

When exploring this stretch of beautiful Kentish coastline, be sure to visit a few of the area’s best spots: Dover Castle, Kearsney Abbey Gardens, Samphire Hoe, Deal Castle, Walmer Castle & Gardens, and Betteshanger Country Park.
Dover Castle is one of England’s most iconic fortresses, with 900 years of history from medieval kings to the Second World War. Highlights include the Great Tower, the wartime tunnels, and spectacular views over the White Cliffs and Channel.
Kearsney Abbey Gardens is a historic riverside park near Dover, known for its ornamental lakes, mature trees, and peaceful landscaped grounds.
Samphire Hoe is a nature reserve at the base of the White Cliffs of Dover, created from chalk marl excavated during the Channel Tunnel construction. It’s now a peaceful coastal spot with cliff views, wildlife, and easy walking trails, popular for birdwatching.
Deal Castle is a Tudor artillery fort built by Henry VIII, famous for its distinctive flower-shaped design.
Walmer Castle & Gardens is a Tudor coastal fortress built by Henry VIII, known for its award-winning gardens, historic rooms, woodland walks and family-friendly trails.
Betteshanger Country Park is a 250-acre country park set on the site of the former Betteshanger Colliery. It offers traffic-free cycling, mountain-bike trails, walking routes, and a Mining Museum, making it the perfect place for a day out.
