Event outline

At Active Medway cycling projects, we have always prided ourselves on delivering lower distance, weekday, steady bike rides across Medway. Our regular participants enjoy a varied cycling background, from those that have learnt to ride to those that prefer a steadier pace of cycling without the hustle and bustle of rushing around.

I’m a first timer, what advice do you have for me:

By pre-booking and contacting us at cycling@medway.gov.uk, we can arrange parking if you choose to bring a vehicle to the start location.

Starting point description:

We will meet by the Visitor Entrance of Chatham Dockyard, ME4 4TY.

Once you have entered the dockyard visitor car park and exited your vehicle, head towards the main visitor entrance where you will see a chimney stack, a silver play park, with an outside toilet block. When you arrive at the slope, turn around to your left and you will see a Round hip height statue with a bronze looking map. This will be our start and meeting point for the ride.

What kind of roads will we be cycling:

The routes will take in between 8 and 10 miles and will be next to the traffic on cycle pathways, respecting all traffic light crossings meaning this will not be a fast ride. We like to think of this route as an educational ride on how the cycle networks can work for you.

What rest stops will be on the ride:

We will be cycling for just over the hour and with road crossings, there will be a lot of little stops along the way.

Further Notes:

The ride is a community group ride and you will need a bike and a helmet is recommended.

Can you tell me more about the route:

  • The Route will follow all shared cycle pathways towards the Strand and in parts the Defensive Trail of Chatham Dockyard.
  • We leave the Historic Dockyard, Chatham and will cycling along the sea wall following the River Medway around St. Mary’s island.
  • We then head into the island on segregated cycle lanes followed by a section of cycling on the road in a neighbourhood area.
  • Exiting the Island via the scenic route, we make our way towards Gillingham pier and depending upon ability, we will heads towards were the Medway queen, or for a challenge the naval memorial.
  • We then head towards the strand for a toilet break before our return or extension route inlcuding the defensive trail depending upon the time.
  • On the return ride we will (traffic crossing and group permitting), head towards the university and the lower lines Park.
  • We then cycle through a quiet car park, then around dockside and return to Chatham Dockyard.
