Discover the beauty of Watts Meadow, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Rochester, between Elthelbert Road and Priestfields. Once a bustling farm where cattle grazed freely, the land was eventually handed over to the council to preserve its natural beauty as an open space for the people of Rochester. During World War II, a portion of the land was designated for allotments as part of the ‘dig for victory’ campaign.
Although some of the original allotments still exist today, much of Watts Meadow has transformed into a lush forest, intertwining with small open spaces along the way. This transformation, combined with the surrounding housing developments, has created a sanctuary for wildlife, an escape from the hustle and bustle of Maidstone Road.
For over a century, a ‘secret’ tennis court has quietly graced Watts Meadow, adding an element of mystery and nostalgia to this picturesque spot. Here, you can breathe in the fresh air, immerse yourself in nature’s beauty, and find tranquillity away from the city’s buzz.
The Friends of Watts Meadow are a community group who help look after the site alongside Medway Council. If you would like to support the committee, take a look at their pages and blogs. Julia from the friends group has kindly shared all the photography for this page.
