Sticks and Stones Festival 2024
Active Medway cycling Projects and The Big Bike Revival
Sponsored by The Big Bike Revival, we will be offering DR FIX sessions for cyclists. You can have your bike checked by a qualified mechanic who will perform minor repairs, make adjustments and give you tips about keeping your bike in good working order. We can provide wearable parts like cables, brake blocks, inner tubes and other items that are available thanks to funding from Active travel England. Any repairs that are not possible, we will help you find the parts you need and contact information for local bike repair centres.

Learn2Ride with The Big Bike Revival
Come along to the festival and engage in conversation about the Learn2Ride program. Any adult who would like to start the activity of cycling and learning to ride their bicycle for the first time will be able to register their interest with the lead cycling coach from Public Health in Medway.
We will be discussing and arranging locations for new venues including extra information around the delivery including our session plans. This event will be the ideal place to start you journey to cycling in Medway.
We will also offer the opportunity to watch a video to help you prepare for any future session on our social media channels.
Although we are unable to offer Learn2Ride at the festival, it will be a great opportunity to meet he instructor and ask questions about cycling and how we deliver this life changing skill in a safe and supportive environment.
To help you understand a little about the Learn2Ride session, we have popped in some key notes:
- Before registering with the Learn2Ride program, you must have your own bicycle and we strongly recommend your wear a helmet for your own safety.
- You must be over the age 18 years due to the programs focus on Adults starting to cycle more.
- Our sessions are reserved for learners who are taking their first steps in ‘A Cycling for wellbeing Journey’. Other family members are welcome to cycle sensibly at any future sessions (we cannot and will not supervise anyone who has not registered with our program).
- For Learn2Ride purposes in Medway only, we ask that your bike will be of a comfortable size that you can sit on the bike with both feet flat on the floor. This method will help build confidence in your cycling ability.
- The process of cycling will be broken down into 5 main phases covering areas such as Bike Awareness, Bike safety, Balancing on the bike, Co-ordinating your pedalling followed by the life changing skill of cycling your bicycle.
- By the end of the session(s), our target outcome will including stopping and starting on a bicycle using your own momentum, cycling in a figure of 8 and know how to access resources to enhance your own cycling journey.
- After the sessions, we do advise participants to keep practising the phase 5 approach to cycling and exploring more of Medway and Kent’s natural surroundings that you might miss by using a vehicle.
- Everyone will have a different experience when learning to cycle, some will take to it quickly and some will need some practise, and we will offer support an encourage for both pathways.
All enquiries for Learn2Ride should be sent to cycling@medway.gov.uk with the subject line LEARN2RIDE.
