Gravesham has been welcoming visitors for centuries and today remains a well-connected place for tourists and those on business. The borough is as diverse and cosmopolitan as its people, it is full of historic and cultural connections. Gravesend boasts one of the oldest Chartered Borough Markets in Kent and celebrated its 750th birthday last year. The town is home to Cyclopark and has three new historic tours for groups, conducted by the council’s own accredited tour guides.

Getting Around Actively!

Active Travel is the simplest and most environmentally friendly way to get around this fast-paced town, with several adventurous and exciting cycling routes available. One is National Cycle Route 1 which connects Dover in the South of Kent to the Shetland Islands northeast of Scotland. From Gravesend, you can follow the route east through Higham and Medway, and onwards to the historic cathedral city of Canterbury.

National Cycle route 177 also runs through the busy town of Gravesend, going between Northfleet and Rochester, and will eventually link Northfleet to Maidstone and Ashford before joining Route 2 on the south coast.

Also, enjoy exploring the town on foot with some of the amazing walking routes that run through the town. One being the Saxon Shore Way which is a 160-mile route that begins in Gravesend and makes its way around Kent’s ancient coastline, in many places now miles inland.

Another walking route which is showcased in the town is the Wealdway, a delightful route across the chalk ridges of the North and South Downs and through the Weald stretches for 82.6 miles from Gravesend to Brighton. You will enjoy spectacular views,  bustling towns and ancient churches.

The Shorne Woods Easy Access Trail is another walking route to enjoy while exploring nearby Shorne Woods Country Park. The wood has everything you need to enjoy a day in the countryside. This easy walk is perfect for walkers of all ages and abilities and takes you through stunning woodland and important wildlife areas.

Whether you’re a visitor or looking for an easier commute into work or school, you’ll find cyclists’ needs are well catered for in Gravesend. The town is well connected to European, national and regional transport systems that give you fast travel to London St Pancreas in just 24 minutes. There are frequent local services to most nearby towns which are run by Arriva Bus Services and Fasttrack buses.

With so many opportunities to admire the stunning views of Gravesend, actively travelling to and from the welcoming town is a no brainer! With the many walking and cycling routes, as well as public transport right on your doorstep, you’ll be saving money, reducing your emissions and staying fit and healthy.
