Faversham

Faversham is a charming market town steeped in maritime heritage. Wander through the medieval streets, try local Kentish produce at Brogdale Farm and Macknade, lose yourself in gardens at Mount Emphraim and Belmont House, or visit Britain's oldest brewer, Shepherd Neame. Alternatively, escape into nature with a walk past Faversham Creek to the marshes along the Swale estuary.

Faversham Walking & Cycling Routes

Oare Marshes: Head towards Oare and follow the creek north to reach Oare Marshes on this 5-mile (8km) circular trail.

For a longer walk by the marshes: Head north along the opposite side of Faversham Creek towards Gravney Marshes and the Swale Estuary on this 10.3-mile (16.58km) circular trail.

Alternatively, follow in the footsteps of Romans and Royalty, heading south out of Faversham through countryside and orchards (passing Brogdale Farm) on this 6.25-mile (10.06km) circular trail.

Macknade offers a variety of produce sourced locally and further afield.

Explore the food hall which includes one of the largest selections of cheese and charcuterie in the UK. Or, enjoy dishes in the onsite cafe featuring produce from the food hall.

Originally a 13th-century wayside hospital, this flint and timber-framed building is now a small museum showcasing a collection of Roman and Saxon artefacts from nearby excavations.

Mount Ephraim Gardens

Enjoy ten acres of family-owned Edwardian gardens in which you can explore the arboretum and stroll through the rose gardens to the Japanese rock garden. Maybe even savour a cream tea from the tea room or have a picnic by the lake along the way.

Directions: Buses run to Boughton-under-Blean (Stagecoach X3 service en route to Canterbury), then walk a small section of the Boughton Street – The Peasants’ Last Revolt Walk (follow route step A2 and A3 – approx 10-15 minutes) to reach Mount Ephraim Gardens.

Set in the grounds of a Victorian mansion, Doddington Place Gardens covers ten acres and includes woodland, rock and sunken gardens. You can even take a trip up ‘The Wobbly Tower’ for an aerial view!

Directions: Faversham Hopper Community Bus Service runs a bus to Doddington, then walk up Church Hill (approx 20 minutes) to reach Doddington Place Gardens.

Visit Brogdale Farm, home to the National Fruit Collection, and take a guided tour through orchards of apples, pears, plums and more. On selected weekends, enjoy picking your own fruit straight from the trees.

Visit the historic site of a former gunpowder works and enjoy the Green Heritage Site accredited wildlife and nature reserve.

The surfaced walking trails around the site lead around through the woodland and past the remains of the buildings, with interpretation boards providing details about the structures and wildlife.

Take a moment to enjoy some tranquillity in the small walled community garden located in the centre of town. It’s free to enter, and you can even get a drink and some cake from the coffee cabin inside.

Travel

Train – Faversham Train Station is located in the centre of town and is within walking distance of many of the points of interest.

Bus – Stagecoach runs bus services to and from Faversham.

Cycle Parking – There are several cycle parking stands in the town centre, including at Faversham Train Station.

Remember you can take your bike on any Southeastern train unless the train arrives or departs London during peak hours – but you can take a fold up bike anytime.
