Bio About Who You Are and What You Do

Originally from Saudi Arabia, I recently moved to Canterbury, Kent, with my family to pursue a PhD in Architecture at the University of Kent. With a passion for discovering new cultures and sports, I have lived in various countries, each time immersing myself in a unique physical challenge. My last stop was Oman, where I embraced horse riding and became a skilled horse racing jockey, experiencing the thrill of endurance races in the stunning Omani desert. Now in the UK, I am excited to explore cycling as part of my journey in Kent, where the beautiful countryside offers an ideal backdrop for new adventures and learning.

What Inspired You to Take On Cycle Training and What Course Did You Take?

After moving to the UK and beginning my studies, my time quickly became filled with PhD responsibilities and the daily tasks of being a mother. With so little time for dedicated exercise, I needed a way to incorporate it into my routine. My daily bus commute, taking my child to nursery and then heading to the university, stood out as an opportunity. Switching to an e-bike could cut my commute from an hour to just 25 minutes, but riding alongside traffic felt intimidating. This led me to take advantage of Kent Council’s e-bike training programs, which built my confidence in road riding and e-bike handling.

What Did You Learn From the E-bike Course?

Through the e-bike training, I gained the skills and confidence to operate an e-bike effectively—something entirely new to me. The course familiarised me with handling uphill routes, which are common along my commute, making me feel much more at ease on challenging terrain. Additionally, I learned to navigate roads with traffic confidently, including understanding road rules and procedures for safe cycling in junctions, roundabouts, and near parked cars. The training emphasized crucial safety measures, equipping me to ride with confidence and ease through Kent’s busy streets.

Where Will You Mainly Be Actively Travelling To?

Most of my initial cycling will focus on my daily commute, allowing me to save time, stay active, and enjoy a boost in energy and mood. As my confidence grows, I look forward to expanding my routes and exploring more of Kent on two wheels. I’m even considering joining the University’s Kent Cycling Union Club, where I could try road, cross-country, and downhill rides—adding even more excitement to my cycling journey.

How Do You Think Using an E-bike Will Positively Impact Your Life?

Using an e-bike has already started transforming my daily routine, blending the practical with the enjoyable. It turns my commute into a time-efficient workout, boosting my energy and leaving me feeling accomplished before I even begin my studies each day. The time saved—nearly halving my usual commute—gives me precious moments back for my family, my research, and my personal well-being. Beyond convenience, the e-bike has introduced a new layer of joy to my lifestyle in Kent, giving me a fresh perspective on my surroundings and a deeper connection to the area.

The more I ride, the more confident I feel, and I’m excited by the prospect of venturing out on cycling excursions and connecting with the local cycling community. With these benefits, I know this simple change will have a lasting, positive impact on my physical fitness, mental well-being, and overall lifestyle in Kent.
