Everyday Histories: Ramsgate Royal Heritage Harbour & Town Trail

Start at the Visitor Information Centre in Harbour Parade, with an introduction to Ramsgate’s craft heritage and those who worked in around the town’s Grade II* listed Royal Harbour – the only official Harbour of Refuge in the UK.

Learn about the skills needed by Ramsgate’s fishing fleet, the lives of the Smack Boy apprentices and the crafts of sailors working on the trading wherries along the quaysides. Walk through the town, visit the sites and learn the stories of tailors, dressmakers, drapers and haberdashers from years gone by, stopping at the Haberdashery & Fabric Shop at 13 King Street to admire their famous “Wall of Buttons”. Explore the oldest part of the town and see the craft exhibition at Maker’s House at 154 High Street.
