We are pleased to announce the North Downs Way 40th anniversary walks programme, delivered in collaboration with a number of partner organisations.

The walks listed cover the length of the trail so there’s something for everyone whether you want to walk in Surrey, Kent or Medway.

Our walk partners come from a very diverse background and will approach the walks very differently.

Day One On the Augustine Camino

The Augustine Camino is a new pilgrimage route linking Rochester and Canterbury Cathedrals with Augustus Pugin’s Shrine to St Augustine in Ramsgate. It is a celebration of our Christian Heritage which, along with walking and talking allows time for prayer. People of all faiths and none are warmly welcomed.

This day trip starts at Rochester Cathedral where we briefly learn about the history of pilgrimage in Kent. Walk up the pilgrim steps worn down by thousands of feet. See the Fresco depicting the Baptism of King Ethelbert by St Augustine and hear about its place in English History. Light a candle at the Chapel to William of Perth. See the Textus Roffensis – the oldest existing copy of laws in the English language (pre-dating Magna Carta).

MEET: Start at Rochester Cathedral – Finish at Aylesford Priory.

DISTANCE: 8.5 miles

The route passes out of the main Cathedral Door, past Rochester Castle down to the river, which we follow out of town then up onto the Downs with views over the Medway Valley. Lunch is at the Robin Hood pub followed by the descent to Aylesford. The Priory was constructed by the Carmelites upon their return from the Crusades in the 13th Century. The refectory, built to feed pilgrims, is still in use for this purpose.

Lunch is available at the Robin Hood pub or bring a pack lunch.  Evening meals are available at Aylesford Priory by prior arrangement.
