Join the Charing Palace Trust for a walk along the North Downs Way to the Pilgrims Festival in Wye. Charing lies at the foot of the North Downs in Kent, just off the route taken by pilgrims for centuries on their way to Canterbury Cathedral. At its heart is a twelve hundred year-old gem of architectural and historical importance – The Archbishop’s Palace. This complex of buildings was once domain of over fifty Archbishops of Canterbury, host to many of England’s kings and was witness to some of the most significant events in European history. Charing Palace Trust is working to save this amazing heritage from decline and bring it into use for pilgrims, walkers, community and visitors.
The walk is 7 miles and will take about 3 hours to complete at a leisurely pace. The group will leave the Archbishop’s Palace at 11.30 am and stop for lunch en-route (please bring your own packed lunch). Arriving at St Gregory & St Martin Church we can join other festival walkers for complimentary coffees and cakes. The return to Charing may be by train, a shuttle of cars, or if you’re fit and keen, another walk. This will depend on numbers and your preferred option.
