Chalk Grasslands and Views Walk

The Darent Valley is lucky to have a number of nature reserves, most of which are owned by Kent Wildlife Trust.  These reserves protect unique habitats of chalk grasslands, with all-too-rare butterflies and insects dependent on the flowers and grasses.  A beautifully preserved wildflower meadow lies over the hill to the east of the valley, once owned by a local farming family who left it intact for over 100 years, but which is now managed by Kent Wildlife Trust.  In the summer this meadow is an enchanted hidden valley filled with orchids, field scabious, sedges, wild thyme and other seasonal wildflowers.  This (strenuous) walk led by local guide Sarah Newman (local photographer and historian) also takes in another chalk grassland area called Fackenden Down Reserve, only recently established, from which there are amazing flowers and glorious views back across the valley.

The route taken may vary depending on the weather and walking abilities of the participants. The walk starts at The Samuel Palmer Inn, Shoreham. Shoreham (Kent) train station is a short distance away, served by Thameslink. Please wear comfortable footwear, sun protection and bring along water.
