Growing Together: My volunteer day at Cozenton Park Community Tree Nursery

9th March 2026
The Cozenton Park Community Tree Nursery in Rainham, Kent has become more than just a growing space. The nursery has become a community powered project dedicated to nurturing young trees, supporting Medway’s green future, and giving local people a hands-on role in shaping their local and wider environments.
One of the most rewarding parts of the Community Tree Nursery is the social side. Volunteers share tasks by supporting one another. These connections can reduce loneliness, build friendships, and strengthen community involvement.
Medway continues to prioritise tree planting, climate change and biodiversity, the nursery showcases how a vital community hub where volunteers can come together to help raise healthy saplings that will one day become part of the area’s woodlands, parks, and community spaces.

Supporting Medway’s Environmental Future
Trees play a huge role in improving air quality, supporting wildlife, and making local neighbourhoods greener. Volunteering at the nursery allows people to directly contribute to these long term environmental benefits. We popped along and spoke to the volunteers.
Our first volunteer interview talks about how they enjoy practical, physical tasks, including building dead hedges and installing posts, which gave him a strong sense of achievement. He found working outdoors refreshing and values being in the fresh air and natural environment. Volunteering makes him feel good because he knows the work contributes to long term environmental benefits. He relates to the idea that every small task plays a part in a bigger ecological impact. His favourite moment at the tree nursery has been creating the new dead hedge line and seeing the progress he’s made.

Welcoming Improvement in Health and Wellbeing
Spending time in an outdoor, nature rich environment, can offer an improvement in your physical and mental wellbeing. The Cozenton Park Community Tree Nursery offers volunteers the enjoyment of gentle physical activity such as planting, digging, watering, and helping maintain the nursery beds. These activities help improve mobility, boost energy, and support healthier routines. Just as importantly, the natural setting offers a calm, restorative environment. Being surrounded by young trees, soil, and wildlife creates a sense of peace that helps reduce stress, anxiety, and mental fatigue.
We spoke to one volunteer who explains that after 30 years in a job that generally involves sitting at a desk, he joined the nursery following his father’s passing and a desire for a healthier, outdoor routine. He volunteers on Thursdays between other work, appreciating the physical activity and the steady weekly progress on site. He especially values seeing how the nursery has changed since its early days, from planting the first small trees to watching the whole space develop. Being in nature feels good to him, offering fresh air and a break from indoor work. He encourages others, especially people who may feel lonely, to join for company, conversation, and the option to either get hands on or simply enjoy the social side.
Building Skills, Knowledge, and Confidence
The nursery has become a place to learn practical skills. New volunteers can learn valuable life skills and potentially spark an interest in horticulture and experience outdoor community spirit. Building confidence over time around their knowledge of greenery and giving every volunteer involved a sense of achievement. All volunteers have the opportunity to explore new skills leading to new pathways and gain experience which could be a valuable life addition.

Seeing the Impact First-Hand
We visited a number of different volunteering projects across Kent and Medway and the results we saw at the tree nursery were easy for all to see. Saplings were growing, and the nursery was evolving into a real community space. Volunteers were getting to see the journey, from seeds to saplings and taking pride in knowing they played an important part in creating a more bio-diverse future.
We spoke to another volunteer who described their first day on site as a standout moment for them, especially after waiting two years for the project to begin. Their aspirations and excitement are for the nursery to eventually “fly alone” with less reliance on the local Green Spaces team. The major focus they hoped for involves expanding the volunteer opportunities, especially weekend sessions. These sessions they hope will start to involve more families and engage the wider community. The passion shown towards education, passing on knowledge, and getting children involved early, was a key milestone to creating and developing a lasting connection to nature. We also discussed an emphasises on the healing power of nature, the importance of biodiversity, and the belief that the nursery offers something unique for Medway.
A Small Commitment with a Big Impact
The Cozenton Park Community Tree Nursery has become a special place to the volunteers, and the community. At the same time the nursery is providing environmental care and personal wellbeing are coming together. The place we visited proved that when people work together, planting, nurturing, and supporting growth, the impact is far greater.
