‘Just Beat It’ Support Group

Just Beat It group of walkers on the banks of the river Medway on the Hoo esturary

8th July 2024

Explore Medway and the Ramblers Wellbeing Walks: Medway invited Cllr Teresa Murray, The Deputy Leader of Medway Council and the Portfolio holder for Health and Adult Services, to join one of our walk and talk cancer support groups established via Facebook by “Just Beat It”.

We asked Cllr Murray to blog her thoughts and experience of walking with the group when we returned to one of ‘Just Beat It’s activity and wellbeing cafés at the local Village Institute.

…”What better way to start the week than with a lovely sunny walk around Hoo with the Just Beat it walking group joining Sean Spillett and friends. We walked across sparkling fields past lakes ,swans enjoying the sunshine and lots of other birds swooping around too. The walk follows the shoreline with some great views and circles back to Hoo Institute where we ended our morning with coffee, cake feeling  refreshed and rejuvenated.

The walk started to offer cancer sufferers some gentle exercise and companionship but has expanded to included anyone who feels they can benefit from coming along, I enjoyed talking to walkers who shared their experience of illness and getting well again, of losing loved ones to cancer, of being lonely and even of moving to the area and wanting to make friends .Everyone praised the kindness of council officers Dave and Brad from our Public Health team who lead the walk ,keep the walkers safe and share points of interest around the area. People went at their own pace but kept together some taking up the challenge of a longer route and meeting up again later, something for everyone with a welcome and a supportive group. I’ll come again when I can and hope you do too”…
