Packing Wood was bought by the Woodland Trust in 1991 and it forms the northern end of the Hamstreet Woods Site of Special Scientific Interest which totals 172.20 hectares. It is ancient semi natural woodland but also has non native conifers which were planted over 38% of the wood in the 1970’s. Entrance into the woods is over stiles, the wood is on Wealden Clay soils and paths can get muddy. A small damp gill valley exists at the extreme south east corner of the wood with a small pond along the route of this stream. Although finding a way into the wood can be tricky it is worth the effort, offering visitors undisturbed walks in a woodland setting.
