Go Car Free for the day!
Active Travel is the simplest way to get around this thriving cathedral city, with several traffic free cycling routes available. Just outside the city centre lies the Great Stour Way, take to the saddle here to discover wild meadows sat against the peaceful river bank where beautiful birdlife and wildlife thrive. Head into the peacefulness of surrounding towns and villages including Chartham with its renowned papermill or why not take a ride to the Blean, Kent’s biggest woodland which also has many tales to tell.
If travelling by foot is more your thing, explore the cobbled streets of Canterbury noting the Tudor buildings that sit so naturally amongst more modern day living and discover riverside gardens and a cider making orchard located within the city itself. The dazzling array of shops, restaurants, tea rooms and cafes will leave you spoilt for choice or why not try out a local ale at Canterbury’s own Micropub the Thomas Tallis.
Whether you are here to stay a while or looking for an easier route to commute into work, you’ll find cyclists’ needs are well catered for in Canterbury. Choose to park and pedal by locking your own bike into a secure compound at Park and Ride, Wincheap and taking to the pedals for the last mile into town. The scenic route will take you about 6 minutes to complete with the Park and Pedal scheme launched in June 2018.
Meanwhile in the town, cycle parking facilities are excellent with waterproof cycle shelters available as well as a number of secure and covered cycle lockers.
