Woodlands Park, which dates from 1937, has extensive sports and recreational facilities – there are tennis courts, a basketball area, a bowling green, a variety of play areas for all ages and even a crazy golf course. All of these facilities lie on the north side of the park, adjoining a vast open space that’s great for ball games. Around the edges of this open space of managed grassland, the perimeter path is dotted with a variety of evergreen and broadleaf trees.

The café is open in the summer months, making the park a great place to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise. The park also has a hidden history, however – underneath the grounds lies a secret Cold War bunker, an underground civil defence command post built in 1954. It was from here that the town’s emergency services were to be coordinated in the event of a nuclear attack.

Refurbished to look exactly as it did in the 1950s, this attraction is open to be visited on special dates throughout the year, and visits can be booked through the Gravesend Visitor Centre.

Easy access information

This park and open space has well surfaced routes suitable for visitors with pushchairs and/or wheelchairs, and has no width restricting features, such as stiles or non RADAR kissing gates.
