Montefiore Woodland is tucked away behind a wall next to the Montefiore Medical Centre in Dumpton Park Drive, Ramsgate. Until recently it was somewhat neglected and overgrown, but now with the help of The Friends of Montefiore Woodland it is being cleared and put back into use. The Friends of Montefiore Woodland was formed in 2011 after Ramsgate Town Council formally handed over the site to the local community. Volunteer work parties have been engaged in identifying resident wildlife, improving the site and arranging activities to encourage community involvement. Montefiore Woodland is next to the Montefiore Synagogue & Mausoleum. Noted as one of the Top Ten Historic Synagogues, and a Grade II* Listed Building, it is built in the regency style of 1833. Designed by the first Anglo-Jewish architect, David Mocatta, the Mausoleum was modelled on Rachel’s Tomb outside Bethlehem. It was built in 1862 and is the last resting place of Sir Moses and Lady Judith Montefiore. A walk in Montefiore Woodland is peaceful and tranquil. This park and open space contains uneven trails, un-surfaced or narrow pathways. Also, there are width restricting features, such as stiles and narrow gaps making it difficult for visitors with pushchairs and/or wheelchairs to access some parts of the site.
